So yesterday, I mentioned that I would try to reinstall Apple’s X11?
First of all, I actually didn’t need the Tiger CD. I found X11 hidden in /System/Installation/Packages (or something like that), which was mentioned in the instructions I linked. (I thought since this was X11 for Tiger, I would need the Tiger CD, uh huh?) I followed the instructions, but I couldn’t complete step 3, since there was no X11R6 folder under /usr. (I DID find the xinitrc file though…had to do some hunting around.)
Ummm…that didn’t work. If you do Step 1 & 2, it’ll bring back the Tiger X11, but it’ll render it useless. I was able to click on it, and the little flash of light that normally appears on the dock when you open an application appeared. But no X11??
(The icon didn’t even show up.)
I then backed everything up with Time Machine. And I reinstalled Leopard (stayed up till 3 doing so). I imported my user info (I had to register under my admin account, which is named after one of my stuffed animals. I’ll bet Apple staff would be surprised to get registration info from a “Jellyhorse Nolastname” XP). After I restored my applications (excluding everything in /Applications/Utilities, I opened X11 to see if it would run…which it did. Then I installed the latest Xquartz update. And suddenly, I was no longer able to use X11 like before (as mentioned in the above paragraph). NOW I knew what was going on. Apparently any of the Xquartz updates on Macosforge kind of breaks the X11 from Apple. The Xquartz that you get with Leopard is on 1.3.0-apple5 (at this moment). But on the other hand, with this Darwine, you have to have the latest Xquartz update for OpenGL to work (although this was back in June, so the latest back then could’ve been 1.4.2-apple5). D:
So just because I want X11 to work period, I’ll be sticking with Apple’s Xquartz 1.3.0. And I’ll play with Ryan’s computer when he’s not home (I just got his permission yesterday, woohoo!!). And eventually I’ll get Windows XP. I was kind of hoping I could play Windows games without having to reboot, but I guess that dream’s a little too far to be a reality…
