The Wildlife in Our Backyard

This morning, while having breakfast, my mom and dad suddenly freaked out and ran into the backyard (I was still in bed at this time, but I heard what was going on). Mom said something about getting Peach inside, and at first, I thought that maybe she caught another bird and wanted to bring it inside (but then Mom and Dad would want her to stay outside). So then I thought that maybe the neighbor’s dog (the people who live behind us) jumped over the wall into our yard again*.

*The neighbor’s dog once jumped over the wall in our yard a couple times. We found out that they have some sort of a planter/shelf with plants, that the dog was able to use to jump up.

I heard the side gate open and close, thinking that maybe the dog’s owners came to collect her. But when Mom came back in, she said there was a raccoon in our yard. :O And the reason why they were freaking out over Peach was because she was following behind it. :O

Well, it came back again, and this time, I got out of bed to take a look. I didn’t have my glasses on, but I did get a good look at it running through the backyard. :3

We’ve gotten other animals in our yard before (a heron, opossum, coyotes out on the street during the evening—our street’s next to a creek). But this was the first raccoon to get in our yard. Now I’m waiting for it to come back and invite its friends for a grub party, like what happened at Jeidai’s house. :P

  1. How funny. Do you live in a rural or suburban area? I remember a few years ago a local newspaper columnist writing about the raccoons who kept getting into his yard — which was interesting since he lived inside the loop (in one of the nicer areas in the middle of the city).

  2. Something like that. I think only 10% of the county is occupied (everything else is federal land), and this city is one of the smaller cities in the county. :/

That’s interesting that the columnist had raccoons in his yard though, given his location. :3
