WHOOPS

It was kind of windy this morning. Not so windy to where lighter weight people were being tousled around and you end up with a minor headache, because you’re imagining dirt flying into your nose to your brain.* But windy enough to make my 32″x24″ blank canvas go flying in all sorts of crazy directions while I was holding onto it.

*I’m pretty sure this is not possible, but since I’ve never actually looked it up, I can’t say for sure. :P

I had the canvas in one hand and the container/box with my painting supplies in the other. The container has a hinge sticking out for the lid, when you open it (not visible in photo). Just as I stepped onto the sidewalk, the wind grabbed the canvas (while I was still holding it) and brought it right smack into the hinge of the container.

I’m pretty sure you could guess what happened. :O

Actually, at first when I heard the RIIIP, I thought it was only the plastic wrapping that was punctured (even though it was the white/gessoed side that flew into the hinge, but hehe, wishful thinking I guess). But no, the poor canvas took some damage as well. :( Luckily, it’s not a huge hole (about the size of a quarter), and it’s not really a hole; it’s more like a slit (well, if I tape it like what I did once I got to the painting studio, it’s just a slit—a really clean slit…if you ignore the fact that there are indentions surrounding the entire thing). I figured if I just paint over it, no one would be able to tell it’s there.

Uhh…well, it kind of already lost its pristine condition when my mom and sister set a couple of lamp shades on it (gessoed side facing up). :3

As for why I was at the library, I was going to turn in my artist’s statement today, but I forgot to print it out. And since the bus got to the school twenty minutes early, I figured I had enough time to head to the library and print it out.

Unfortunately, the library I was picturing is different from the current library, because right now, the one I’m thinking of is no longer a library (will become the Student Union building). The new library is kind of out of the way and is no where near any of the other buildings. In other words, if you decided to go to the library in between classes, be prepared for a bit of a walk. So instead, I tried the open PC lab at the IT Center, only to discover that “ohhhh, because the new library is now officially opened, we’ve moved all open computer labs to said library” (paraphrasing, of course :P ).

I could think of no other computer labs I could use (we’re only allowed to print pictures at the Art Complex’s computer lab), so I wound up having to go to the new library.

And the big puddle in front of the library? It was back when I got there. O_o I hope I’m not the only one confused about what this is supposed to be or what its purpose is.

(As for my artist’s statement, she liked it, since it was honest and clear, but also wanted me to write about the current series I was doing, i.e. it’s a narrative of these bearcats exploring a world in a painting or something.)

  1. What’s a gesso … thing? Side of your canvas?

I need to see this puddle. :o

  2. Gesso (as in “jesso”—I always thought it was with a hard g until I heard my painting teacher say it ^_^;) is the white stuff you prime canvases with. :3 The canvases you buy in stores already come with the gesso, but they also sell the gesso separately in bottles for people who built their own canvases. (Speaking of which, I have a large bottle of it lying around. I got it for an immediate painting class in Spring ’06, since it was on the supply list, but as it turns out, the painting studio already had their own for us to use. X_x)

It’s mainly for painters, but I guess you could always use it in other ways (i.e. one guy in the Art Department used it to glaze one of his ceramic pieces, and when fired, turned out to be a nice, gold, metallic color).

If you come to the student show, you might be able to see it. :3 I feel kind of weird walking by and staring at it, while everyone else is walking by and act as if they don’t notice it. :P (Only problem is I don’t know when said student show is. The Capstone group hasn’t said anything about yet.)
